Record bar and sushi restaurant inspired by Japanese jazz kissas in downtown Nashville owned and operated by Turnberry. Traditionally kissas are intimate places where people get together to drink and listen to records, with very personal spaces rooted in a DIY, cobbled together design tradition. The challenge was to take this very esoteric concept and adapt it to a commercial space at the base of the JW Marriott hotel tower. It was important that the interiors feel authentic and celebrate the spirit of kissas and our love of Japanese culture and design. To capture the spirit, we focused on using humble materials like construction grade plywood, recycled gym floors, cardboard Sonotubes, linoleum flooring and recycled denim batting in unexpected and imaginative ways; and we recruited a number of Japanese artists and artisans to create bespoke elements including a lighting installation above the bar designed by Yusuke Nagai in washi paper made from pulped record covers by Senda Takanori, and upholstery fabrics by Akira Minagawa for Mina Perhonen. We also collaborated with Devon Turnbull on custom speakers, Adam Pogue on patchwork light fixtures and Sofia Londono on a monumental sushi bar and DJ stand wrapped in custom tiles.
