Gaetano Pesce
On the intuitive design objects of Gaetano Pesce
12.23.2023
If there were a word to describe this day and age perhaps it could be liquid. Maybe that’s why the work of Gaetano Pesce seems as relevant as ever. As technology develops (AI), and the world changes, (global warming, political stability, and values) there is solace in the positive, optimistic, and fluid work of the 84-year-old designer whose work gives us a glimpse into a colorful and malleable future.
During his decades long career as a designer, he has innovated in materiality, exploring objects made of plastic, resin, and foam to create novel forms that fill the permanent collections of museums all over the world. His work is free of logic and embraces instinct, taking shape in one-of-a-kind forms that relate more to our natural bodies and nature and less to the static energy of straight lines and planes of modernism. His unbound work exists in a space somewhere between art and design. It speaks to a philosophy that doesn’t seek to contain or categorize.
This lack of boundaries is an inspiration for how we can practice design and be more open to a future that will be filled with change.
